| | Queensland's Department of Public Works is a diverse agency that consists of three major divisions (Works, Services, and Corporate and Executive Services). Under the Works role, the Department of Public Works leads the Queensland Government's building infrastructure delivery, maintenance and asset management program - designing, building, fitting out and maintaining public buildings and associated major facilities including hospitals, schools, police stations, court houses and government office accommodation. The Department is the central provider of owned and leased office accommodation and employee housing for all Queensland Government agencies. It develops and administers a suite of whole-of-government policies on the management of building capital works, the management of maintenance of government buildings, supplier prequalification, the management of office accommodation and the performance of government building assets. In the construction industry, the Queensland Government, through the Department of Public Works, continues to play a key role in training apprentices and is the only government in Australia that has up to 350 apprentices at any one time. As part of its broader portfolio of responsibilities under Services and Corporate and Executive Services, the Department plays a vital supporting role across the Queensland Government and its agencies in delivering their services throughout the State. These roles include whole-of-Government information and communication technology (ICT), procurement, record keeping for the public sector, and other services such as the provision of government vehicles, business supplies, and printing. These roles extend to the Department's relationship with the private sector in the construction, ICT and other fields from which the Department is associated. It all its roles, the Department works closely with industry to deliver services, infrastructure and development for Queensland. | |

| | The Queensland Department of Main Roads is responsible for managing Queensland's largest infrastructure asset - the 34,000km long Queensland state-controlled road network worth almost $30 billion dollars. To achieve the vision of "Connecting Queensland", Main Roads plays a key role in the management, planning and provision of road transport infrastructure for Queensland. The road network links communities, facilities, business and industry, and in partnership with other transport infrastructure providers, connects people and places within the context of the Queensland Government's social, economic and environmental objectives.
Queensland is Australia's fastest growing state with our population recently hitting the 4 million mark. Roads are currently the predominant mode for all interstate freight movements and the majority of urban passenger and freight movements. While the average national growth rate for freight over the last decade was 2.8%, in Queensland it was 8% per annum. Roads carry most of the non-bulk freight tonnage, and this role is likely to continue even with a significant shift of freight to rail. | | Building Commission PO Box 536, Melbourne VIC 3001 Phone: +61 (0)3 9285 6400 Fax: +61 (0)3 9285 6464 |
